[NOTE: I wrote this essay the day before writing “The Mechanics of Non-Physicalness“. There was dual meaning in how I used the word ContinuuM, for I also published a magazine by that name. This essay never made it into the magazine, as only two issues were ever published. New additions are enclosed in [brackets].]
A Universe of Everlasting Love
Technorati tags: death, life, soul, spirituality, existence
Though it sounds paradoxical, the topic of death and dying need not be a morbid one. While it is understandably a sad occasion to see a loved one succumb to old age, incurable disease, or senseless crime, it is a greater sadness to see a life that is lived without meaning, where for all of our days, our love is handed over to fear. To break the hypnotic spell of our fears, and the “circle” of sadness, it is important that we begin viewing life as a continuously changing continuum that “overlaps” points of apparent non-existence. Let’s call the idea to be adopted the ContinuuM Concept.
The power of the continuum concept will grow with deeper levels of acceptance, which is made possible through further contemplation, and practice. The idea will be more effective if it is adopted while one is healthy—and not in physical, emotional or mental “need” of its comfort—than it would be if we were in fear of our imminent demise. However, even in the worst of cases, the continuum concept will begin to melt fear away.
In order for this idea to take hold, we need a way of conceiving how it is that we can exist without a physical body (hopefully in a world without taxes). This is where science and religious teachings have provided very useful information for us to consider. Science has advanced the concept of energy while religions and philosophies around the world have spoken to the existence of the spirit and Soul. Additionally, the fundamental “material” of the universe, as presented in certain metaphysical teachings, is light. Like energy, light exists in many shades, degrees of brightness and vibrational frequency. It is therefore reasonable to deduce that one’s spirit and Soul may manifest in the same way[, and be composed of the same “thing”.]
For example, there might be a “level” of human spirit that is basically instinctive, which takes little more volitional actions than animating the physical form. Yet, we know that humans are not slaves to our instincts (though some would like us to believe that we are). We are the only beings on the planet that can consciously choose not to prey on each other even if “hunting” is instinctive. We are the only ones that can choose to help another who may look or speak differently than we do, instead of fear (or prey on) them. Only we have the ability to look past apparent physical differences and see the one Inner Light in another that resonates with our own.
There is something within us that makes this kind of transforming behavior possible, desirable, and to some extent, even expected. That “something” might be the Soul. It has also been referred to in various writings as the Higher Consciousness, Higher Self, Super Consciousness, Super Ego, and many others. We’ll simply use the term Soul, using capitalization in deference to its special qualities and power.
The Soul would appear to represent a higher energy form… and perhaps the true essence, and potential of human-beingness.
Our contemplation of the Soul is not presented with any religious bias. The Soul’s existence makes sense logically. Something is indeed responsible for the wide and varied levels of behavior that humans demonstrate. We do not come from the same behavioral “cookie cutter”. Indeed, if the Soul is one of our non-physical and unseen parts, it is conceivable that we may not even “come” from Earth or from the same planets, solar systems, or galaxies. Nonetheless, for those who are open to such outpourings, love, respect, balanced truth, and wisdom appear to be universal in their power to wash away fear. They are the real languages of the universe. If we learn how to demonstrate these qualities to each other, in this world, and in this lifetime, I believe we’ll be welcome anywhere in the cosmos when our days on Earth are done. I also believe that we’ll become aware of life that has thus far been inconceivable [or undetectable].
Indeed, it is important that we begin conceiving life for ourselves that span beyond our physical lifetime. In other words, we need to adopt a belief in the reasonableness of a non-physical life that we will be experiencing. This again is not new to religions. However, each requires you to believe in a specific set of potential conditions that sometimes may require rational belief to be suspended.
Nonetheless, we need to start acknowledging that the “three-score and ten” model gives no hint of the totality that is life. By accepting and then beginning to actually understand the existence and role that the Soul can play in our existential journey, our interactions with each other would begin improving immediately. This would also affect the quality and breadth of our experiential options when it comes time to “leave” this world. Instead of desperately seeking to avoid any thought of “ending”, we can enjoy the moment, but feel a sense of comfort and anticipation about what lies beyond “the end”.
Hypothesizing about the nature of the Soul is in no way an exercise in wistfully looking to the Hereafter as the point when all our “troubles” end. Quite the contrary, if we don’t commit ourselves to positive actions and interactions with each other now, it is reasonable to posit that our current troubles will continue on through “the end”.
It is oh so common for us to express our love (or fear) of God, but damn (and certainly fear) our neighbor. We can witness thousands upon thousands of assaults against each other—in our TV dramas, murder mysteries, horror films, and The Evening News. But can anyone conceive of actually trying to “assault”, or gain retribution from God? And is that perhaps what criminals, on some level, are actually trying to do?
In the perceptual subtext of reality, in the great expanse of “space” between protons, neutrons and electrons, a profound oneness between energy fields is evident. Like fish that exist in the ocean, we exist in an atmospheric one. Even in its invisibility to our eyes, it is evident that the Soul is a real entity, and is capable of wonderful, powerful things. Therefore, to assault another human, particularly strangers, is tantamount to an assault on God. While either act would qualify as mindless, in my opinion, human-on-human assaults are occurring somewhere each second. The irony is that the perpetrators often actually think they’re getting away with something [or are able to], when they’re just burying themselves further onto a path of ever narrowing options.
Okay, so now you’ve accepted that you have a Soul, which exists now, and represents your “highest impulses”. What do you do with this understanding? I suggest that you begin dreaming wonderfully, seriously, and begin taking actions that will support their manifestation. Dream caringly, that the actions you take will heal rather than court meaningless [and avertable] tragedy. Dream lovingly, that your actions inspire and empower those who experience them.
We can count on people not knowing, or even caring about our dream. We can count on discovering that “support” we thought we had was actually lip service. We can count on people discounting and not believing in us. But we must not discount ourselves. We must believe. We must care. Find the dream that you care most about making real, so that all the study and work that you put into it will not be like “work” at all, but play. It will be re-creation, as you bring that which is in your mind and heart, into the “here” and “now”. Know the dream that makes all other activities pale in comparison, and within this realm you will find true love.
Happy dreaming!
